Derivational Complexity and Context-Sensitive Rewriting

چکیده
Abstract Context-sensitive rewriting is a restriction of where reduction steps are allowed on specific arguments $$\mu (f)\subseteq \{1,\ldots ,k\}$$ μ ( f ) ⊆ { 1 , … k } k -ary function symbols f only. Terms which cannot be further rewritten in this way called $$ -normal forms. For left-linear term systems (TRSs), the so-called normalization via - procedure provides systematic to obtain normal forms by stepwise computation and combination intermediate In paper, we show how bounds derivational complexity computations using context-sensitive rewriting. Two main applications envisaged: Normalization -normalization can used with non-terminating TRSs still terminates; other hand, it improve terminating as discards many rewritings.

Lazy Rewriting and Context-Sensitive Rewriting
Lazy rewriting (LR) is intended to improve the termination behavior of TRSs. This is attempted by restricting reductions for selected arguments of functions. Similarly, context-sensitive rewriting (CSR) forbids any reduction on those arguments. We show that, under certain conditions, LR and CSR coincide. On the basis of this result, we also describe a transformation which permits proving termin...
متن کاملAutomated Complexity Analysis Based on Context-Sensitive Rewriting
In this paper we present a simple technique for analysing the runtime complexity of rewrite systems. In complexity analysis many techniques are based on reduction orders. We show how the monotonicity condition for orders can be weakened by using the notion of contextsensitive rewriting. The presented technique is very easy to implement, even in a modular setting, and has been integrated in the ...
متن کاملContext-Sensitive Term-Rewriting
At first an introduction to context-sensitive rewrite-systems is given. The main part of this paper deals with the topic how one can prove termination of contextsensitive rewrite-systems. This can be done either by either transforming them into non context-sensitive ones or by extending the existing techniques which are used to prove termination of classic rewrite systems. This is described in ...
متن کاملContext-Sensitive Rewriting Strategies
Context-sensitive rewriting is a simple rewriting restriction which is formalized by imposing fixed restrictions on replacements. Such a restriction is given on a purely syntactic basis: it is given on the arguments of symbols of the signature and inductively extended to arbitrary positions of terms built from those symbols. The termination behavior is not only preserved but usually improved an...
متن کاملDerivational Minimalism Is Mildly Context-Sensitive
The change within the linguistic framework of transformational grammar from GB–theory to minimalism brought up a particular type of formal grammar, as well. We show that this type of a minimalist grammar (MG) constitutes a subclass of mildly context–sensitive grammars in the sense that for each MG there is a weakly equivalent linear context–free rewriting system (LCFRS). Moreover, an infinite h...
